Through The Fire

April 2

"He responded, ‘Look! I see four men untied and walking about in the middle of the fire unharmed, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!’”

(Daniel 3:25)

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego had refused to bow to the golden image, choosing faithfulness to God over compromise. As a result, they were thrown into a blazing furnace—punishment for their obedience. But in that fiery trial, something incredible happened: a fourth man appeared, one who looked divine. They were not alone in the fire. God was with them.

This verse speaks volumes about God’s presence in our trials. He does not always prevent the fire, but He promises to meet us in it. For those of us who are enduring suffering, this truth is life-giving. We may face the heat of temptation, the flames of judgment, or the pain of past failures, but we do not walk through them alone.

The “fourth man” in the fire is a picture of Jesus; Immanuel, God with us. He doesn’t stand at a distance, offering advice from safety. Rather, He steps into the fire with us. The same God who stood with those three faithful men in Babylon walks with us today through our addictions, losses, shame, and struggles. And like them, we can come out of the fire not even smelling like smoke (Daniel 3:27)!

Your current trial may feel overwhelming, but remember, God is not absent. He is present in the middle of your fire, breaking chains that bond you and preserving your life. Faithfulness in the furnace reveals His power and presence in ways we never experience on the outside.

What “fires” are you walking through right now? How might God be using this trial to show you that He is with you?

God my Father, thank You for being with me in every trial. Even when the heat of life feels unbearable, You are there, strengthening and sustaining me. Help me trust You in the fire, knowing You are refining me, not abandoning me. In Your name I pray. Amen.
